The Upper Tellico Off-Road Area is a high basin located in the Unicoi Mountains. The area had several private owners including timber companies from 1950 until 1969. It was heavily logged.

The roads built for logging were abandoned. Nature restored some of them  to their original condition. OHV enthusiast started using more of these steep roads. They became deeply rutted from ORV use.

The Forest Service purchased the land in 1980 and began a restoration program. OHV use will still be available but with an environmentally friendly approach. Tellico and it's tributaries pass through the 8,000 acre area. Elevation ranges from 2,500 feet to 4,979 feet on Grassy Top Mountain.

The Annual Dixie Run

The 20th. Annual Dixie Run was held Sept. 30, 2006 at the Upper Tellico OHV in the Cherokee and Nantahala Forest, at the state line area near "Hanging Dog" in Murphy, NC.
The 43 miles of trails are famous for having some of the best 4x4 trail riding in all of the U.S. The closest towns are Murphy, NC south of the area and Tellico Plains, TN northwest down along Tellico River.

The  Dixie Run is held annually at the end of September. The event has a variety of trail rides with trophies awarded and events for family and children at the campground.
